Today’s Ancient Surfaces is an ode to the gorgeous textures of winter that sharpen as colors subdue into wintery grays and blues. The piece is a reminder to search for beauty, even in harsh weather. In my opinion, the beauty of winter lies in the crevices of tree bark, sand patterned by melting snow, whirling rock surfaces, and cracked soil. Winter requires us to spend time with parts of the world that are often overlooked.

Today’s Ancient Surfaces is also a meditation on deep time, creation, and human-made materials. I combine natural objects with objects that could be human-made or nature-made, which is a comment on the ways human-made materials have rapidly become a natural part of our landscape.
