ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings help me churn through endless questions and powerful sensations without the necessity for words, facts, or justifications. For me, painting is a digestion of the world and an attempt to articulate myself within it. When I paint, I follow intuitive cravings and then watch the painting unfold over time. In this process, I find myself oscillating between abstract instinctual mark-making and meticulous realism. Rushed marks, repetitive details, indefinable shapes, and identifiable objects all intermingle with one other. These different approaches create a surreal story where materials that seem to oppose each other in texture and purpose, like clouds and plastic, interact and seek balance. When I let cravings, contrasting techniques, and contradicting textures exist in the same space, I can open myself to the simultaneous existence of multiple truths in order to have a deeper understanding of myself, the people I love, and this Earth. On the canvas, all of my confusions, convictions, and complexities are allowed to exist. As a result, my inner landscape is revealed to me.
