Concept: Deep Time Mind is a discussion on my changing relationship with time in my personal life as well as in my work. Slowing down is imperative to managing the climate crisis. We cannot produce and consume as rapidly as we do now. From an environmental justice perspective, we must comprehensively address the past in order to build a better future. On a personal/Individual level, our past memories and future dreams are all tied up with our present. Our emotional bodies are constantly navigating events that occurred at various times and events that could occur in the future. Within our identities, time is warped and complicated. I believe that we need to stop our collective obsession with production for the future and deeply consider our past and present purpose. We exist across multiple timelines, and there’s so much more to it than I could ever put into words. So I made this painting!

The materials I used in this piece are also specific to the concept. I only covered half of the panel’s edges so that I could show the layers of wood peaking through. I keep finding myself including more and more subtle reminders of manufacturing processes in my work. I want to call attention to materials and point out the entire lifetime of items. This panel is made of wood from Finland, which had to be grown and chopped and flattened and layered and stored and shipped and then finally landed in my hands.

The blue objects in this piece also carry discussions about a world full of manufactured items. They’re strange, non-functional items that float around with no real place. Yet, these items define and shape the space around the figure. How are inanimate, single-use, or useless items defining and shaping the space around us? How do we understand our selves, bodies, and futures, in a world full of place-less objects?

Lastly, this piece praises fungi, the incredible teachers who constantly challenge time and remind us to expand our sense of self.
